Hundreds of youths were Monday turned away from the police recruitment exercise because of dental fluorosis.
The men and women with were told that they could not be recruited into the force because their teeth were discoloured.
The officer in charge of the recruitment, Peter Macharia said it was the norm in all forces not to recruit people with brown teeth.
“We have turned away so many because of dental fluorosis and many felt disappointed but we had no option,” said Macharia.
Some of those turned away lamented that teeth colour or dental structure should not be a factor for recruitment into the disciplined forces.
“It’s not my teeth that are going to reason or hold that gun and I don’t see why I should be locked out because of my teeth colour. They should look at my other physical features and brains, not my teeth,” said incensed John Kinyua.
Most residents of Nakuru have partially or fully discoloured teeth due to the high levels of fluorine in water.
