A Malawian young man has been burnt to death after being suspected of stealing a handbag, the Nyasa Times reports.
The unidentified young man was beaten by an angry mob in the southern African country’s second biggest city of Blantyre after he allegedly stole a handbag that had two smart phones, plus $59, from a woman at a bus station.
This came as reports indicated that mob justice was on the increase in the country, prompting President Peter Mutharika to condemn the acts of violence.
In January, Mutharika expressed shock, and spoke out against the murder of four elderly people who were killed by an angry mob who accused them of being witches following the death of a 17-year-old girl.
The teenage girl was arranging buckets on a veranda in order to collect water from the rain when she was struck by lightning.
Following the incident, the community organised themselves into a mob, and accused the four of being involved in witchcraft and causing the girl’s death.
