The son of former Zambian president Rupiah Banda has criticised the current administration led by President Edgar Lungu, calling on citizens to “wake up” because there is a “wrong person” inb State House.
According to The Post, Andrew Banda’s utterances followed a move by police to deny the leader of the United Party for National Development (UPND), Hakainde Hichilema, permission to hold meetings during his recent visit to the country’s eastern province.
According to Banda, the development was a clear breach of Zambia’s Public Order Act.
“In the last two months, president Lungu has been here three times and the reasons are so simple; it’s because we are going towards the elections and disadvantaging others like Hakainde, who has been permitted only to come once. He applied several times but he was not allowed to hold meetings,” Banda was quoted as saying.
Banda also took the opportunity to dish out harsh criticism against Lungu, describing him as a man who preaches God, but does things are not “godly”.
Banda was rebuked by youths within the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) at the beginning of the year, with Lusaka PF Youth Chairperson Kennedy Kamba saying that the “political novice” should focus on his current corruption trial and quit entangling himself in matters that concerned “political heavyweights”.
Banda was arrested in 2012 over corruption charges relating to an alleged bribe that he accepted for more than $30 000. He was found guilty and sentenced to two years in prison.
