Residents of Migingo Island, which is at the center of ownership controversy with both Kenya and Uganda claiming it, have said they are tired of living in confusion and anxiety.
A group of five residents of the Island, three Kenyan and two Ugandans who escorted one their neighbor to the graduation party of his relative in eastern Uganda town of Namayingo complained that they are not sure who owns the Island.
One of them, Daniel Ojambo said, ”I am a Kenyan but I live comfortably with Ugandans on the Island, but sometimes I feel insecure when I learn that Uganda and Kenya are at loggerheads over the ownership of the Island.”
William Mugweri, a Ugandan said that he does not mind who owns the Island so long as he is left to fish freely in the waters near the Island.
”So long as am free to fish, I do not mind who owns the Island,” said Mugweri.
Another Kenyan, Simon Ouma said that they are all east Africans and should settle the issue of ownership amicably.
“All we want is peace. We are all black people. Some of the people at borders speak the same language and even share clans. Why should we fight over Migingo?” posed Ouma.
Charles Musoke, another Ugandan said that the Island should be taken over by the east African community so the two countries can stop fighting over its ownership.
