Leaders allied to ODM and the Council of Governors’ vice chair, Salim Mvurya have condemned the national government for withdrawing security guards attached to governors Ali Hassan Joho and Amason Kingi.
“Withdrawal of security officers attached to Governor Ali Hassan Joho and Amason Kingi is an act of intimidation to the governors. Each Governor is entitled to enhanced security; denial of this entitlement is thus unacceptable,” said Governor Muvrya in a statement to the media.
He said the Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet should move with speed to reinstate the security detail of the two governors unconditionally.
Matuga sub County ODM chairman, Hassan Chitembe cautioned the Coastal regional co-ordinator Nelson Marwa over his move to withdrawal Joho’s security saying he is in office unconstitutionally and should keep quiet.
Police have confirmed that Joho has already surrendered one of his firearms.
Kwale ODM MCAs led by Omar Boga said the Jubilee government seem to be planning something against the opposition and Coastal region ahead of the 2017 election since the Lamu Governor was also intimidated in the same manner recently.
“Someone is misleading the President on this issue because what we are seeing is different from the attempts by Jubilee to win votes in the area,” he said.
Addressing journalists at Information House on Friday, Boga said all governors have the right to own a firearm and have security details for their safety.
Tiwi ward MCA, Omar Mwakwambirizwa said the move is a clear indication that the Jubilee government wants take back the country to the era of one party which will not be allowed.
“For the sake of democracy, the national government must reinstate the security of the two governors and MPs,” he said.
Ramisi-Mivumoni MCA, Khatib Dzugwe said that opposition leaders must be respected since the country does not belong to a certain group of people or community.
Ukunda MCA, Omar Kitengele said it is unfortunately that the government is targeting Joho and his family business due to his political stand.
Kwale County assembly Majority Leader, Nassoro Mgutta said the government is only intimidating CORD leaders from the Coast region because they lost the Malindi by-election.
“Why is it that they are not frustrating 61 MPs from Nairobi who were in Malindi bribing voters? Why target CORD? We want action taken immediately,” he said.
Nominated MCA, Fatuma Juma said the move to disarm CORD governors and MPs is inhumane and shows lack of respect for democracy.
She said coast people are tired of being used as ladders for people to get to the State House.
