Three people have alleged died from a fresh outbreak of Lassa fever in Bauchi state, with ten members of a family currently fighting the disease.
According to a Vanguard report, officials have revealed that the outbreak began with a 78-year-old man who passed away without seeking medical treatment.
Ibrahim Gamawa, Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency, the deceased had contracted the virus from Liman Katagum, an area that recorded Lassa fever cases in November.
“The victim was put on traditional treatment from patent medicine stores for a number of days before he died. 10 persons contacted the virus and samples of their blood were taken to Irrua laboratory in Edo State, where they were confirmed positive,” he said.
According to Gamawa, those infected with the disease are currently being treated at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital in Bauchi.
