Egypt’s population growth is at half mast. According to figures released on Thursday by the Ministry of Planning, it will slow to 1.4% in 2023, its lowest rate in decades.
Egypt is the Arab world’s most populous country, with 106 million people, according to the official Egyptian statistics office.
The decline in population is excellent news for the government. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had previously cautioned about the impact of the birth rate on public finances and government services.
At a time when 60% of the population lives below or near the poverty line. Not only that, but the country has an infrastructure deficit, including schools and hospitals. And it’s disintegrating under the weight of mounting debt.
To counteract the demographic push, the authorities started the 2019 campaign “Deux, c’est assez” (Two is enough).
