Nairobi – Teachers and motorbike taxi operators have been blamed for the escalating number of teenage pregnancies in Kenya.
This is according to the 2015 National Adolescent and Youth preliminary report, which goes on to add that majority of school going children start engaging in sex before attaining the age of 15.
Standard reports that factors such as parental negligence, poverty, drug abuse and unsafe sexual behavior also contribute to teenage pregnancies.
Teenage pregnancy has been a challenge in the country, forcing many girls to drop out of school at Primary and Secondary school level to look after their children or get married.
According to statistics, 103 pregnancies in every 1 000 in Kenya involve girls aged between 15 and 19.
Pregnant school girls have been reported to perform poorly in school, with the most affected being those in rural areas.
Parents have been urged to provide sex education to their children to protect them from risky behavior which contributes to teenage pregnancy.
