How To Gauge Your Partner’s Ring Size

When you fall in love with the most gorgeous engagement ring, there’s always the worry that it won’t be the right size for your partner’s finger. There are many ways in which to sneakily discover your partner’s ring finger size without blatantly asking her (that’s no fun!).

Get ready to do a bit of investigative work by:

– Chatting to her friends. They’ve probably gone jewellery shopping with your partner before so the bonus is her friends will also know what style of ring your partner would most like.

It also helps if one of her friends has similar hands to your partner because then you can get a good idea of the right size.

Looking through her jewellery box. If her friends are not much help, another idea is to go through your partner’s jewellery box. Find a ring that she usually wears on the same finger so that you are guaranteed of the perfect fit.

What happens if your partner doesn’t wear rings on her ring finger?  Choose another ring from her collection, such as one she wears on her middle ring finger, and trace all around and inside the ring with a pencil and paper.

Then tell the jeweller that the ring should be a little smaller or bigger to fit her ring finger.

Studying her hands. If you can’t go through her jewellery box (example: if you don’t live together), another idea is to pay attention to her hands when you’re out together.

Hold her hand and notice the size of her ring finger in comparison to yours. Is it much smaller and thinner? Being able to compare her finger against yours will help you explain to the jeweller how big the ring should be.

Damage control for rings that don’t fit

What happens if, despite your brilliant investigative work, the engagement ring doesn’t fit correctly? Don’t panic! There are easy ways in which it can be adjusted.

What you can do
You might not even need to bring the ring to the jeweller for adjusting. You can purchase a Ring Snuggie (available online and at some retail stores). It is a small piece of silicone that you will place between the ring and the finger to close the gap so that the ring fits better. This also feels comfortable to wear.

What the jeweller can do

If your partner isn’t keen on the DIY option of a Ring Snuggie, there are more permanent ways that the ring can be adjusted. Jewellers will make use of a fold-over device or sizing beads. A fold-over device is a piece of metal that’s soldered to the bottom of the ring to close the gap between the ring and finger.

It’s comfortable – usually more comfortable than sizing beads which are essentially two small metal beads that get soldered to the bottom of the ring to keep it in place.

However, it’s important to note that while most rings can be adjusted, such as your stunning gold and silver engagement rings, there are some rings that cannot be professionally resized so it’s worth bearing this in mind before you go ring shopping if you are not totally sure about your partner’s ring size.

Avoid:

– Rings made of stainless steel, tungsten or titanium.

– Rings that have an invisible tension setting. These rings have a “floating“ diamond held in place by pressure exerted onto it by the metal band of the ring. Having it resized is possible by expert jewellers, but it will likely cost a lot and can cause the ring to become less aligned.

– Rings that have gemstones or diamonds all around the band. Resizing these rings can cause the ring to lose its form and balance, while also causing possible damage to the stones.

Choosing the best engagement ring for your partner is not just about a ring that matches her preferences and personal style, but also fits her finger beautifully.

Follow the above tips to find the perfect fit and learn how to work your way around sizing issues without any fuss.
