Woman Killed In Eastern Cape Hail Storm

An elderly woman was killed, several people were injured, and homes damaged by a heavy hailstorm in the Eastern Cape, a municipal spokesperson said on Thursday.

Heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds and hail left a trail of destruction in Mount Frere and Mount Ayliff on Wednesday night, Alfred Nzo municipality spokesperson Ndabuko Masumpa said.

Anna Sokoyi, 81, was on her way into a house in Nqalweni village when bricks fell on her. One of her grandchildren tried to assist her but was unable to.

Leaders from the Alfred Nzo district and Umzimvubu local municipalities would visit her family, assess the damage, and see how they could help other affected families.

Disaster and emergency teams had been dispatched to villages like Rhode, Mjila, ‎Ntsizwa, Mandileni, Sirhoqobeni and Lubaleko.

Local residents were still calling in on Thursday to report damage, Masumpa said.
