Nairobi – University students are planning a nationwide demonstration on Tuesday over lack of loans for first year students.
Led by Nairobi University Students Union chair Babu Owino, they are threatening to go to the streets if the Higher Education Loans Board HELB does not remit the loans by Monday 1 February 2016.
” I am giving HELB till Tuesday next week to disburse HELB loans to all first year comrades in the nation failure to which a mega demo is coming,” he sad in Nairobi Friday.
He added that the students are suffering from lack of loans which he says is a right of every student in the country.
” All comrades to prepare for a mega demonstration next week should HELB fail to obey my command of releasing the loans. We will not beg,” he added.
In a rejoinder, HELB stated that it was working on the loans and that it had indicated that it would pay for the students most in need.
In September last year, students were again on the streets demonstrating the late arrival of the loans, saying that HELB was deliberately holding on to the money for their own reasons.
