Despite its uncanny resemblance to raccoons or badgers, the tanuki is indigenous to East Asia and is actually part of the canid family, which includes foxes, wolves and domestic dogs.
According to Buzzfeed, the Japanese man who uses the Twitter handle @chibi_tori, found the abandoned raccoon dog and had been raising him since June 2015.
The man named him Tanu and started sharing photographs of the animal in his home on social media.
Tanukis emit a whine or growl similar to foxes, rather than a bark. This particular tanuki seems to enjoy eating a wide range of foods and is often photographed sitting next to a little stove to keep warm.
