Thirty-one-year-old Maalik Alim Jones appeared in federal court in New York City last month on a complaint and indictment unsealed Monday, according to the US Department of Justice.
According to the indictment, Jones, a US citizen, left Baltimore in 2011 and traveled to Somalia, where he was taken to an al-Shabaab training camp.
After being trained how to shoot firearms and operate a rocket- propelled grenade launcher, Jones allegedly took part in a battle in the Somali town of Afmadow against Kenyan soldiers.
Court records do not list a lawyer for Jones.
