Ukraine, Egypt, Japan win UN Security Council seats

New York – Ukraine, Egypt, Japan, Senegal and Uruguay won non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council for 2016-17 in a vote on Thursday in which all five countries ran unopposed.

Ukraine, which won the mandate to represent Eastern European countries on the council, vowed during its election campaign to stand up to veto power Russia, which Ukraine says is waging a war against it.

The country received 177 votes from the 193 UN member states, securing a clear win for the election, which requires a two-thirds majority.

Egypt got 179 affirmative votes, Japan got 184, Senegal received 187 and Uruguay secured 185.

The five countries will serve a two-year mandate on the 15-country decision-making body starting January 1 2016.

They will replace five outgoing non-permanent members – Lithuania, Chile, Jordan, Chad and Nigeria.
