Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk said the protest was in retaliation to a recent traffic operation.
“The group is demanding to speak to the Minister of Transport regarding their dissatisfaction in respect to the non-issuing of taxi permits.”
He said the group burned tyres on the road, making it impossible for motorists to enter or exit.
The city’s safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith said officers last week impounded 19 taxis during a two day operation in Retreat and Vrygrond.
Smith said Prince George Drive was reopened to traffic. The incoming lane of Capricorn Boulevard was closed and Vrygrond Avenue was closed in both directions.
The police’s reaction units were on the scene and Van Wyk said no reports of violence had yet been received.
