Joburg man cleared of killing his wife – report

Johannesburg – A businessman has been cleared of the murder of his wife, The Star reported on Tuesday.

The court found that police ballistic tests were wrong.

“The worst is that, having made the mistake, they kept quiet about it and it was left to us to discover,” BDK lawyer Piet du Plessis told the daily.

The charges against Dieter Bergs, who will turn 80 on Sunday, were withdrawn in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday for the murder of Genee Bergs, 70, in their Parktown North home in March last year.

He told the police at the time that he was in his study, and his wife was asleep, when he heard two loud bangs.

When he went to see what happened he saw an intruder, who then shot him in the hip.

He was granted R10 000 bail in September 2014,News24 reported.
