Pretoria – ANC Women’s League delegates on Thursday sang songs about their preferred leaders to be elected at its conference in Pretoria.

Some made rolling gestures with their hands, indicating change was needed.

One group sang songs in support of social development minister, Bathabile Dlamini – who is understood to be standing against current ANCWL president and basic education minister,Angie Motshekga.

Other delegates held up two fingers, indicating their support of a second term for Motshekga.

The conference got underway in Irene, Pretoria on Thursday just before 11:00.

Around 3 000 delegates – dressed in their traditional ANCWL green blouses – were attending the elective conference.

ANC secretary general, Gwede Mantashe, and Gauteng chairperson, Paul Mashatile, joined the ANCWL leadership on stage.

President Jacob Zuma, who is answering questions in Parliament on Thursday, is expected to address the ANCWL later in the day.

Motshekga will also present her organisational report, which is set to clarify the league’s position on a woman president.

National police commissioner Riah Phiyega, as well as ANC deputy secretary general, Jessie Duarte, were also in attendance.
