Johannesburg – Five people have been arrested for possession of precious metals near a mine in Krugersdorp, Gauteng police said on Friday.

The men were arrested around 03:00 on Thursday, when police who were patrolling the area found them loading bags of gold soil into a vehicle near the mine.

“Some of the suspects ran away,” police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said.

She said the gold soil appeared to have been stolen from a nearby mine.

The group, aged between 18 and 29, was expected to appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court soon.
