Egypt’s highest appeals court on Thursday ordered a retrial for former president Hosni Mubarak on charges relating to the deaths of protesters, after granting an appeal by the prosecution, state-run newspaper al-Ahram reported online.
Last year, a lower court dismissed charges brought against Mubarak over the killing of protesters during the 2011 revolution that forced him to step down.
At the time, the court acquitted al-Adly and the six other co-defendants.
The retrial will mark the third and final stage of the legal process and will be heard by the Court of Cassation. The verdict will be irreversible.
Mubarak and al-Adly were convicted in 2012 of failing to prevent the killing of protesters during the 2011 revolt that ended the strongman’s three decades of rule.
That ruling was overturned on appeal and a retrial ordered.
Mubarak, now 87, has been living at an army hospital in Cairo for most of the time since his ousting.
