
Here are six key points:
1. On contact crimes: “To resolve the whole issue of murder – to think we [just as the police] can resolve the murder in society is effectively a hallucination.” He said it is a societal problem that needs a multi-faceted approach “It … has to be tackled at family units and composition of society, the manner in which we school, our culture all becomes quite critical.”
2. A total of 686 police officers were arrested for various crimes during the 2014/2015 reporting year.
3. The “influx of undocumented foreign nationals” remains a serious issue, with Nhleko noting a spike in certain crimes in the areas where there is a large number of these individuals.
4. During the reporting period, Nhleko acknowledged that there had been an upswing in minibus taxi related violence.
5. Over 80% of the entire country’s crime statistics are community reported, that is, someone walked into a police station and reported the crime.
6. On his main concerns: Nhleko mentioned high levels of violence and aggression in society; that socio-economic inequality is contributing to levels of crime; and the prevalence of firearms even with thousands being destroyed every year.
