Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) lawmaker Jessie Majome, reportedly accept four death threat messages ahead of last Thursday’s demonstrations against Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.
According to New Zimbabwe, the massages from an unknown source came two days before the country’s official opposition party that brought the capital Harare to a standstill on Thursday.
The MDC members and their leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, demonstrated against president Mugabe’s government.
Reports stated that the march was the biggest that the country had seen in more than a decade.
Some of the text messages sent to Majome read: “I have killed many, if you want me to add your name to my death list, continue participating in tomorrow’s MDC-T demo.”
“I am watching your steps everyday, don’t try to be a hero, be warned your participation in the planning of tomorrow’s MDC-T demo invites death at your door step.”
However, Majome promised that she would not be discouraged from performing her duties.
NewsDay reported that a number of other MDC officials had also received threatening text messages before the party’s demonstration.
Among the MPs who received the threatening messages was the party’s deputy national organising secretary, Amos Chibaya.
Chibaya confirmed receiving the death threats on his mobile phone from an unknown number, written “Hitman”, the report said.
Chibaya said he was unfazed by the death threats.
“They won’t deter me at all. I won’t be victimised because I do not fear anyone. All that I want is to free the people of Zimbabwe,” Chibaya was quoted as saying.
