Zambian Millers Call On Govt To Formalise Mealie Meal Exports

ZAMBIA
ZAMBIA

The Millers Association of Zambia has appealed to government to allow millers to export mealie meal to neighbouring countries in order to regulate the ongoing issue of smuggling.

According to The Post, the association’s suggestion was set to ensure proportionate allocations so to avoid shortages on the local market.

The association’s chairperson, Andrew Chintala, said that millers should play a key role in exporting the commodity, so as to curb the issue of illegal outflow.

This, he said, would also increase Zambia’s foreign exchange earnings.

Zambian mealie meal was reportedly being smuggled into different countries, including Burundi.

Reports indicated that “greedy businessmen” were smuggling the commodity to the east African country and other neighbouring countries.

Police recently impounded two trucks of mealie meal headed for Burundi and 28 maize-laden trucks destined for Malawi.
