Game of Thrones’ last season has been a colossally disruptive one up until now, with individuals scrutinizing the composition and plot since it has moved far from George RR Martin’s books, and the hurried pacing.
With the most recent – penultimate – scene of the show, those reactions have apparently gone into overdrive.

Twitter is currently more ablaze than King’s Landing, with many people claiming that the showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss have ‘ruined’ the characters of Daenerys Targaryen and Jaime Lannister.
If you’ve not seen the episode yet (why are you reading this?), Dany decided to torch innocents and soldiers alike after they had surrendered, while Jaime tried to escape with Cersei and start a new life. Elsewhere, Arya abandoned her mission to kill Cersei, while Cleganebowl ended in both The Hound and The Mountain dying.
Here are just a handful of people’s unhappy tweets:

For like the 87th time, it’s not where the plot went, it’s HOW THEY GOT THERE. Dany can go crazy! Arya can give up revenge! But my god let these plotlines BREATHE.
I mean but also tossing Jaime’s entire redemption arc out the window was not great. OK, OK, I’m done now!

But in the interests of balance, as all things should be, many people pointed to previous scenes that hinted at Dany burning the disco down. They may not have thought it was well done, but they are saying it was in character.
And then there were some who just outright loved the episode
You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
Dany's arc wasn't bad writing idk what y'all on about. It was foreshadowed for so long.#GameofThrones pic.twitter.com/35DzwVjzeJ— Asad Naveed Malik (@asadnmalik) May 13, 2019

This week’s episode of #GameOfThrones was brilliant. You can all stop whining about where certain characters stories went now, it was bound to happen.

Tonight’s episode made me feel very uncomfortable because we saw what could have been the greatest fantasy hero’s journey twist into what might be the most epic villain story ever put to screen. And I think I liked it. pic.twitter.com/Gh0qbzXyJm

Also, say what you will about the rushed writing of the season, but this was probably the best cinematography of #GameofThrones since the Battle of the Bastards. pic.twitter.com/Ifems9fTSp

To be fair, Game of Thrones has never been about the typical ‘hero’s journey’. It’s a world where horrible people do horrible things, and the more noble people usually get crushed down by the horribleness.
Lena Headey revealed that her initial reaction to her final scene was “mixed”, while Varys (RIP) actor Conleth Hill has said that he was frustrated his character was sidelined in the last few seasons.
