Two districts at the border of Uganda and Kenya have been hit with cholera which has so far claimed 4 lives while 7 people including 5 children and two adults have been admitted in hospitals in critical condition.
The two border districts are Busia and Namayingo.They are both harboring people mostly of the same tribe with those on the other side of Kenya ,the Itesot and Samia.A good number of people living in the border district have relatives on the other side of the border.
In Busia 6 people have been admitted in Masafu government hospital where an isolated ward has also been established to cater for Cholera cases.
One of the medical workers in the hospital,Simon Wanyama said,”Our district has been hit by cholera.We have put in place an isolation ward where the cholera patients will be treated.”
He said that they do not have enough drugs to cater for the patients and appealed to the government to send more drugs.
Namayingo health officer,Robert Okunga said that lack of cleanliness and hygiene as the main cause of the disease.
Okunga said,”Many people in our district do not have latrines and help themselves in bushes.Their waste ends in wells where they fetch water and in many case drink it when not boiled.”
He said they are going to pass a by law in the district where all those with no latrines will be arrested.
Ministry of health official,Andrew Samanya said that they are going to send more drugs to the two districts in addition to sending there a team to sensitize people about how to avoid being infected with cholera.
