Sudan: Omar Hassan al-Bashir Appoints VP Hassan Saleh As New Prime Minister

Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir named his first vice president and long-time ally Hassan Saleh to the newly created post of prime minister.

Saleh who is expected to be sworn in on Thursday will continue to hold the position of the country’s Vice President.

He will be tasked to forming a new cabinet immediately after he’s sworn in.

The retired army general is a former defence, interior and presidential affairs minister.

The position of Prime Minister was created following an amendment in Sudan’s constitution in December 2016 on the demand of opposition parties. Although Bashir agreed to the proposal, he has reserved most executive power to himself.
