Retired captain David Kabuye, who served six months in prison last year for illegal weapons possession, was rearrested in March accused of “inciting insurrection and insulting senior government officials” while he was behind bars.

Defence lawyer Ndayambaje Gilbert said the prosecution were demanding he be jailed for 15 years for incitement to revolt, as well as six months’ imprisonment for defamation.

Kabuye, husband of a former head of protocol for President Paul Kagame, denies all charges and claims they are politically motivated. The court’s verdict is due on December 15.

Kabuye was first arrested last year along with two other Rwandan military figures.

The prosecution accusations include that Kabuye said Kagame had “got rid” of opponents, with those including a string of corpses found in a lake bordering Rwanda and Burundi.
