President Uhuru Kenyatta has defended Kenyans decision to close the Daadab refugee camp saying that its being done in the interests of the nation.
Addressing the nation during the 53rd Madaraka day celebrations at Afraha stadium President Kenyatta said that the closure of the refugee camps is not cruelty or change of heart from his government.
The president said that the decision by his government to close the camps is in the interest of Kenyans security.
He said that Kenya has hosted refugees from different countries for over 25years and it will continue providing a safe haven for refugees from all over but that must be done putting the security of the country first.
“The decision to close the Daadab refugee camp should not be interpreted as cruelty or change of heart by the international community,”
“It was done in the endeavour to provide security to Kenyans and make Kenya safe,”
“Kenya has for over 25years hosted refugees from Somalia, Suda ,Ethiopia, Uganda,Rwanda ,Congo and Burundi and we will continue to provide a safe haven for refugees from all over but with the interests of Kenyan security at heart,”said the president.
At the same time president Kenyatta said his government was open to criticism but also challenged the opposition to also see the positives being done by his administration.
He further said that his government was open to dialogue but insisted that such dialogue must be done within the confines of the legal framework.
