The National Muslim Advisory Council chairman, Sheikh Juma Ngao has urged security officers in Mombasa not to harass Muslims during the Ramadhan fast scheduled to commence on weekend.
Speaking during the Madaraka Celebrations at Tononoka Grounds in Mombasa Wednesday, Ngao expressed concern over the matter adding that most of the time security officers mistake Muslims with gangsters.
“We have some special prayers like Taraweh which are sometimes conducted during the night. I urge County Commissioner to make sure that these people are safe,” he said.
He requested the new Mombasa County Commissioner Mohamed Maalim who was also present at the Wednesday event to keep an eye on the matter.
Ngao however cautioned Muslims against taking advantage of the season to cause tension.
“If there is any Muslim who will take advantage, I ask our officers to take action on them. After the prayers you should go home peacefully,” he added.
His sentiments were supported by other leaders including Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba who also wished all Muslims Ramadhan Karim.
