A manhunt for criminals, who allegedly abducted an albino baby in Malawi’s Kasungu district, remains ongoing, seven days after the incident occurred.
According to a report by Malawi24, unknown assailants broke into the house of Madalitso Leman on April 1, 2016, and proceeded to abduct her 23-month-old baby.
Police revealed that the mother was alone with her child in the family home at the time of the abduction.
“Just as usual, Leman went to bed with her baby, but as she was waking up around 4 o’clock, her baby was not there. She quickly noticed a broken window, which made her suspicious that someone had broken into the house. She then informed neighbours, who tried to follow footsteps, but eventually lost track of them,” said the police.
Although the matter had been reported to officials shortly after the crime took place, no arrests had been made in the case as yet.
Malawi has seen a rise in albino attacks and killings in recent times, with the Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) expressing concern over the epidemic.
A previous News24 report revealed that, although Malawian officials had announced harsh new penalties for those in involved in violence against albinos, financial backing seemed to be a hindrance to progress.
