Parents of five of the missing Chibok girls in Nigeria have been left in a state of shock and confusion after receiving strange phone calls from the mobile numbers of their missing children.
According to Naij, the anxious parents tried in vain to phone the numbers back, but were only met with harsh words and threats.
The callers, who remained unknown, also gave conflicting information regarding their location, with one stating that they were from Ondo, whereas the other claimed that they were from Cameroon.
Yakubu Nkeki, representative for the Chibok girls’ parents, supplied the information to authorities, saying that he (the parent) had had missed a call from his daughter’s number but was instead greeted by a man when he attempted to call the number back.
“The speculation that a Chibok girl phoned her father is not exactly like that. It is actually the telephone numbers of about five girls that are being used to call people but when the parents call back, different people answer, some will say they are in Ondo or in Cameroon. All the parents that were called missed the calls,” said Hosea Tsambido.
Tsambido was the chairperson of the Kibaku Area Development association, an organisation that represents the Chibok community in Abuja.
The missing girls were kidnapped from the Chibok Girls Government School by Boko Haram extremists on April 14, 2014. Two years after their disappearance, their whereabouts still remain unknown.
Nigerian Pastor Tunde Bakare recently lambasted the Nigerian government for its handling of the mass abduction, saying that too little was being done to rescue the girls and bring them back to safety.
