Ocampo Took Kenyans And ICC For A Ride, Says Sakaja

Pressure is mounting on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to take action against  its former prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo for conducting shoddy investigations in the cases facing six Kenyans following the disputed election in 2007.

Ocampo, the then prosecutor on December 15, 2010 shocked Kenyans when he revealed the names of six Kenyans who were expected to stand trial for crimes committed during the 2007-2008 post-election violence (PEV) at the ICC.

The ICC on Wednesday acquitted two of the suspects; Deputy William Ruto and journalist Joshua Arap Sang for lack of evidence. Other suspects including President Uhuru Kenyatta were let scot-free on the same grounds earlier.

Speaking to News24 Thursday, TNA Chairperson Johnson Sakaja who congratulated Ruto and Sang for their acquittal said Ocampo must be punished for taking the court and Kenyans for a ride.

“Ocampo should be looked for wherever he is. Action should be taken against him for bringing anguish to the six Kenyans and making them waste their time and resources shuttling from Kenya to the Netherlands. The least he can do is issue an apology to the world and the victims of his shoddy investigations,” explained the nominated MP.

Speaking separately at a press conference convened by the Journalists For Justice (JFJ) in Nairobi, Deputy President William Ruto’s lawyer at the ICC Karim Khan echoed Sakaja’s sentiments.

“The Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) and particularly Luis Moreno-Ocampo has a case to answer as to why he rushed to name six Kenyans including President Uhuru Kenyatta, his Deputy William Ruto and others at the eve of his departure from office,” explained  Khan.

Joshua Arap Sang’s led defense counsel Kigen Katwa and Wilfred Nderitu, the common legal representative for PEV victims attended the press briefing.
