Nigerian essayist, Chimamanda Adichie, has answered those reprimanding her for her current remark about Hilary Clinton’s twitter bio.
She blended debate when she said she was annoyed with Mrs Clinton’s use of ‘spouse’ on her twitter bio at a PEN World Voices Festival address.
A few Nigerians who responded to the meeting, said she took her woman’s rights too far, including that the inquiry was meddlesome and Mrs Clinton has a decision on her view on being tended to as a ‘Spouse.’
Meanwhile, some others argued that the question was necessary for women to understand that they have to celebrate their achievements, not just on the home front, just like men.
In her response to critics, Ms Adichie on her Facebook page expressed disappointment at Nigerians “who read a headline and, without bothering to get details and context, jump on the outrage bandwagon and form lazy, shallow opinions.”
She further explained that she believed the word ‘wife’ on Mrs Clinton’s bio was used as an attempt to placate all the men and women who will not vote for a woman unless they are able to see her FIRST in domestic terms.
She condemned those asking her to “shut up” describing it as so unoriginal as she urged Nigerians to try and be a bit more inventive.
