The leader of Niger’s military administration ordered the dissolution of all local councils on Thursday, putting an army officer in charge of the capital, according to state media.
General Abdourahamane Tiani, who deposed the African nation’s elected president in a coup last July, has signed an order to dissolve municipal and regional councils that were last elected in 2020, according to Tele Sahel.
“Municipal councils, town councils, and regional councils are dissolved,” the report stated without explanation.
A second directive, broadcast by state radio, listed military, police, and public officials as those in command of local authority.
An army colonel has replaced Oumarou Dogari, the mayor of Niamey, the capital.
The military took over the country last year to combat a growing Islamist threat.
