A Malawian parliamentarian has come to the defence of President Peter Mutharika, saying that the economic hardships currently faced by the south-east African country were a legacy that he inherited.
Speaking during a parliamentary address on Tuesday, vocal MP Bon Kalindo blamed former President Joyce Banda for Malawi’s current economic woes.
Kalindo said that the suspension of aid to the country was caused by revelations that funds were being stolen from government coffers, according to Malawi24.
The MP’s statement came amid severe hardships faced by most of the Malawi population, with some citizens having to sleep in long queues in order to obtain maize from aid donors.
Opposition parties recently shared their opinions on the issue, giving Mutharika an ultimatum to improve the ailing economy within 90 days or hand in his resignation.
According to Maravi Post, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), along with the People’s Party (PP) and the Alliance for Democracy (Aford), rallied together on February 28 to make their ultimatum, in the hope that it would spur the president into action.
Pressure seems to be mounting daily against Mutharika, with citizens calling for a speedy remedy to the country’s economic ills.
