Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Thursday night confirmed he had tested positive for coronavirus.
The veteran opposition leader had checked into hospital in the capital Nairobi on Monday, after complaining of fatigue as well as to undergo a series of tests.
The 76 year old, had just returned from a grueling five day tour of Kenya’s coastal region.
A statement from his doctor indicated that Raila was “responding well to the treatment he is receiving at the Nairobi Hospital and remains upbeat. We are continuing to monitor his progress.”
Kenya is currently experiencing the start of a third wave of Covid infections, with an average positivity rate of almost 13 percent this week.
In a statement the former PM said he was largely asymptomatic and was only isolated as a precaution.
“Despite the fact that I feel strong and in good shape after a few days in hospital, I have agreed with my doctors to undertake the mandatory quarantine,” Raila said.
Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta is Friday expected to address the nation on the coronavirus pandemic to outline whether current restriction measures will be lifted or tightened.
The country has so far recorded 111,185 coronavirus cases, 87,994 recoveries and 1,899 deaths.
