Nairobi – A voter registration in Kariobangi turned violent when Jubilee and Cord supporters clashed, resulting in one being seriously injured and a motorbike torched, reports The Star.
The violence ensued after the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) decided to move the voter registration center from the Marula Primary School to the Kariobangi Social Hall.
The two groups had stormed the Kariobangi police station up in arms against the IEBC deciding to move the voter center.
The Jubilee supporters wanted Marula Primary School to remain the center however only 500 voters were registered.
The groups were led by area MP James Gakuya, MCA Michael Wainaina of Jubilee and MCA aspirant Michael Ouma Majiwa of Cord.
When the groups clashed they hit each other with stones, and acted out against the police.
According to Peter Ochieng last week people had been transported to Marula Primary School to register to vote. People as far as the Pipeline Estate in Embakasi had come to register.
Despite reporting the matter to the police, nothing was done.
However Jubilee MP James Gakuya accused Chord of being afraid they will lose the elections and that the IEB did not consult local politicians.
“How can you detect that those coming to register are from which area? The law allows everybody to register anywhere,” said Gakuya.
IEBC spokesman Tabitha Mutemi confirmed that the constitution allows all people to register at a place of their choice.
She also lambasted politicians for ferrying people from other areas to register, saying it is wrong.
Meanwhile the Jubilee party has been accused of using the NYS loot to bribe Kericho voters ahead of the senatorial by-election set for March 7.
KANU secretary general, Nick Salat said that huge bundles of money are being ferried into the County at night to bribe voters with the aim of convincing them to vote for the Jubilee candidate, Aaron Cheruiyot in the heated mini poll.
