KENYA
There is no money to pay teachers and they should resume duty, Deputy President William Ruto said yesterday.
He said the government respects the rule of law by following the directive from two independent commissions.
Ruto said the Teachers Service Commission and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission have spelled out their positions on the teachers’ salary increase.
He said the two are independent commissions set up by the constitution which should be respected by all Kenyans.
Ruto spoke at Mung’ang’a Primary School yesterday during a fundraiser for the completion of Mung’ang’a ACK Church.
Ruto contributed Sh1 million and helped raise Sh2.7 million.
“The executive, judiciary or legislature have no mandate to interfere with the country’s independent commissions,” Ruto said.
He said teachers are civil servants and they should follow the guidelines from the Sarah Serem-led commission when seeking for a pay hike.
“Among the mandate of the SRC is to ensure that salaries are paid equitably without being forced by the workers,” Ruto said.
