Kenya: Raila Strikes Peace Deal Between Nandi, Luo

CORD leader Raila Odinga says that lack of development between the Luo and Nandi border is the cause of continued clashes between the two communities.

Raila told News24 Sunday that there cannot be proper development in the country without peace among the communities bordering one another.

Raila asked the communities to desist from cattle rustling.

There have been endless slashes between Nandi-Kisumu and Kericho-Kisumu borders.

The former prime minister blamed lack of proper development for the consistent conflicts between the neighbouring communities.

” If there is development, there is commerce and growth and some issues stop existing. That is the case here,” he told News24.

He called on the government to seek long term solutions to the issues.

” We need long term solutions. We can agree to be peaceful but as long as the economic situation is tough, then it will disappear,” he stated.

Luo Council of Elders chairman Willis Otondi and Arap Bitok of Nandi performed peace traditions where the two communities shared a meal.

The elders urged their communities to end perennial conflicts instigated by animal theft.
