Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has been lauded for opting to retire before his term ends in the Judiciary.
Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau has said the move was based on patriotism and would create time for appointment of his successor.
He said Mutunga also portrayed high level of nationalism and respect to the constitution, saying other leaders should emulate him.
“Mutunga has shown us a good example by putting the country first. He gave out enough time for appointment of a new chief justice, who will be in a position to oversee election dispute come 2017,” he noted.
Mutunga retired a year before he was expected to leave office.
His term was to expire on the June 22, 2017, having taken up the job in June 2011.
However, the announced that he opted to retire early citing the need to take up the transformation process across East Africa.
“I would like to spend time talking to the judiciaries in Eastern Africa, Africa and Global South about our transformation journey and its lessons. Ours has been what I have called transformation from the margins,” said Mutunga.
“Seeing an audience from East Africa, and colleagues who may not have reflected on what we have achieved, I would not miss the opportunity for anything!” he added.
Mutunga’s early retirement came just a year before the constitutionally stipulated age of 70
