The Kenya Airways pilots’ union KALPA on Monday announced the suspension of its intended strike on Tuesday.
The union explained in a statement that its decision to suspend the strike followed talks between the union, airline and government which resulted in their demands being met including the replacement of the chairman.
“We have received government assurances that changes will be made to intervene in the management of Kenya Airways,” the statement said while emphasizing that the strike has not been cancelled.
“We have received government assurances that changes will be made to intervene in the management of Kenya Airways.”
Meanwhile, shares in Kenya Airways jumped 6.5 percent in early trading on Tuesday after the strike suspension. Shares traded at 4.90 shillings ($0.05) each.
The national carrier was hit by losses in recent weeks after its pilots threatened to strike in demand for the resignation of the CEO, Mbuvi Ngunze and the chairman Dennis Awori because of their inability to straighten the company after four consecutive years of losses.
