The government has blamed judiciary saying it is frustrating war on illicit brews.
Principal Secretary in Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government, Karanja Kibicho has said the judiciary is lenient on manufacturers and sellers of illicit liquor.
Speaking at Majengo slums in Nyeri town during a crackdown on second generation brews, the PS blamed the courts for the deaths of young people resulting from consumption of killer brews.
“Judiciary should protect the lives and property of the public. War on illicit liquor is receiving frustrations from some of our government officers,” Kibicho said.
He urged the Judiciary to support the crackdown by imposing hefty fines to manufacturers and sellers of the brews noting that all government agencies must work together.
He further warned County Governments against issuing licenses to rogue businessmen whom he said were selling illegal items.
“We have bars with 24-hour operating license selling illicit brews. Some are licensed under Bar and Restaurant while they sell second generation liquor, tea and snacks. County governments must also stop licensing bars,” he noted.
Kibicho, who was accompanied by Nyeri County Commissioner Onesmus Musyoki and Regional Coordinator Naftaly Mung’athia destroyed hundreds of litres of second generation brews impounded at the slums.
He said a ban imposed on sale of molasses within Mount Kenya region will not be lifted soon, stating that the Agriculture Ministry has been mandated to issue new licenses.
He also instructed chiefs to ensure no existence of the brews in their areas of administration or else they be dismissed.
