It is no secret that the CORD Coalition does not want the IEBC to continue in office. On the other hand, the Jubilee Coalition is fighting hard to have the IEBC remain. Why?
The impasse has led to continued protests in the country over the body which has seen 5 people dead and many others injured.
CORD wants dialogue over the matter but Jubilee insists it must be dealt with in Parliament. But why?
According to Majority Leader Aden Duale, IEBC commissioners cannot leave office despite CORD’s calls and possible dialogue as there is no law on their replacement.
“They will have to come to Parliament to change the laws. IEBC commissioners cannot leave office until the law providing for their replacement is enacted,” he told News24.
“If Hassan and his team left office or if one or two Commissioners died, there is no law on how they will be replaced,” he added.
He said that the calls by CORD for change now would leave a constitutional crisis.
” Who will replace the ones who have left? Who will run the agenda?,” he posed.
CORD says that they will increase the frequency of the protests in the coming weeks if the IEBC is not changed.
