The incoming UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres, has chosen as his deputy Amina Mohammed of Nigeria, who spearheaded adoption of the UN’s global goals for 2030.
Guterres announced on Thursday that he will also appoint two other women to top posts — Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti of Brazil as his chief of staff and Kyung-wha Kang of South Korea to a new post as special adviser on policy.
The former Portuguese prime minister and UN refugee chief will take over from Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on January 1. He said “these three highly competent women … are the foundations of my team”.
Guterres said he chose them “for their strong backgrounds in global affairs, development, diplomacy, human rights and humanitarian action”.
