President John Mahama on Sunday [April 24] attended a durbar at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi to climax the Akwasidae Kese, which coincided with the 17th year of the ascension of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to the Golden Stool.

Dignitaries, including international guests were also at the event.

President John Mahama presented 12 bottles of Schnapps, 6 Brandy and 6 bottles of Whiskey at the colourful ceremony.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II arrived at the durbar in a palanquin, amidst cheers and beating of drums and playing of horns.

Security personnel were at the venue to maintain law and order.

A thanksgiving service will be held at the St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church on April 26 at 9am as part of activities to mark the special occasion.

Born Barima Kwaku Dua, the Ashanti monarch was made king on April 26, 1999, succeeding Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, hence becoming the 16th ruler of the Asante kingdom.
