Gabon General Named Transitional President By Coup Leaders

According to a TV statement, the organizers of the Gabonese revolution declared Republican Guard chief General Brice Oligui Nguema provisional president on Wednesday, after the military seized authority following elections.

According to a news release read out on Gabon 24, “General Oligui Nguema Brice was unanimously appointed chairman of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions, chairman of the transition,” said an officer in the presence of dozens of senior officers.

Nguema is one of the most influential figures in Gabon.

Oligui Nguema used to be very close to Ali Bongo’s father, the late President Omar Bongo.

When Ali rose to power in October 2009, Nguema was sent to Morocco and Senegal for diplomatic missions officially; to keep him away from power reports have claimed.

When he returned to Gabon he took over as head of the secret service. Then in 2019 was appointed  head of the republican guard, an elite unit in charge of the president’s security that vows him loyalty.
