Shock has gripped residents of Gititu village in Tetu Nyeri County after a 71-year-old man allegedly committed suicide over KES.50,000 debt he owed a local shylock.
Gabriel Kiboi was found hanging from a macadamia tree at his farm by family members who notified the administration officers.
Tetu OCPD Steve Obara said the man used a sisal rope to commit suicide and his body had no physical injuries.
According to residents, the man is said to have committed suicide after the moneylenders threatened to auction his property after he defaulted in payments.
However, the family refuted the claims saying the debt was not the cause of the incident as they termed him as a friendly and talkative person and they did not understand why he decided to take his life.
Obara said police were, however, investigating the matter to unearth the truth.
The body was taken to Nyeri County Hospital mortuary.
