Egyptian president Abdel Fattah Al-sisi has raised hopes that the truth will be known concerning the death of Italian student Giulio Regeni, a situation which has created a diplomatic row between Cairo and Rome.
The question was raised during a press conference chaired by Francois Hollande and Al-Sisi as the French president visited Egypt.
Regeni, a 28 year old Italian PHD student researching the Egyptian Labour Movement was found dead early February.
I have already said before that we are ready to cooperate in a transparent manner with the Italian investigator here so they can be reassured of the transparency with the investigations being conducted here.
“I have expressed many times my deep condolences for the death of the Italian youth (Regeni) and I have already said before that we are ready to cooperate in a transparent manner with the Italian investigator here so they can be reassured of the transparency with the investigations being conducted here (Egypt),” Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi said.
In earlier outings president Al-sisi had rejected allegations of complicity by Egyptian security forces as investigations on Regeni’s case unfolded.
He had also indicated that the way the case is being perceived at home and abroad has endangered the country.
Continuous claims of transparency in this case by Egyptian authorities have not convinced the Italian public, close observers of the case say.
