CORD’s Parallel Madaraka Day Plans Revealed.

CORD will be holding a public rally at Uhuru Park as the country celebrates the 53rd Madaraka Day on Wednesday.

The party has confirmed that it has already secured the venue so they can “celebrate civil liberties and freedoms and reaffirm the quest for Constitutionalism in Kenya.”

In a letter dated May 23, the head of CORD Secretariat Norman Magaya asked the police to cooperate and make the event a success.

“We kindly request you to organise for the necessary security arrangements to ensure the safety of all leaders and wananchi who will attend the rally,” read a part of the letter.

Kenya will be celebrating the 53rd anniversary of internal self rule on June 1.

President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that this year’s celebrations will be held in Nakuru, which is the first time the celebrations are taking place outside Nairobi.

CORD has been holding demos to force the ouster of IEBC commissioners since April 25, but on Wednesday they put the protests on hold ‘to give dialogue and peace a chance’.

Confirming on Twitter, they said: “#CORD has suspended the peaceful #CORDdemos by a week to give room for dialogue as requested by the Clergy & Foreign Envoys #IEBCMustGo.”
