Christiaan Olwagen’s 80’s musical drama, Kanarie (Canary), starring comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout has been extended to a sixth week at selected SA cinemas due to popular demand.
KANARIE (Afrikaans for ‘Canary’) is a coming-of-age musical war drama, set in South Africa in 1985, about a young boy who discovers how through hardship, camaraderie, first love, and the liberating freedom of music, the true self can be discovered.
The movie’s distributor Filmfinity announced on Wednesday, 21 November that the movie will extend one more week at the following cinemas nationwide: Ster Kinekor Nouveau V&A Waterfront, Ster Kinekor Tygervalley centre, Ster Kinekor Somerset Mall, Ster Kinekor Nouveau Brooklyn Mall and Ster Kinekor Nouveau Rosebank Mall as well as the Labia Theatre on Orange Street, Cape Town.
Kanarie has also passed the R1.2m mark, which is seen as a benchmark for local South African commercial films.
“With Kanarie being more of an art-house, LGBT focused feature, we are extremely pleased with how the film performed at the local box office. We would like to encourage those who have not seen it make an effort and see it on the big screen this weekend,” says Jaco Nothnagel, Head of Marketing and Associate Producer at Marche Media.
