Bassirou Diomaye Faye Wins Senegalese Presidential Election

The provisional official results of Senegal’s highly anticipated presidential election, held on Sunday, March 24, have been revealed, with Bassirou Diomaye Faye winning with an amazing 54.28% of the vote. The National Vote Counting Commission issued this declaration on Wednesday, March 27, signaling a watershed moment in the country’s political landscape.

Amadou Ba came in second place, with 35.79% of the vote. Aliou Mamadou Dia is trailing at 2.8%, followed by Khalifa Sall at 1.56% and Idrissa Seck at 0.9%. The voter participation for this election was 61.3%, demonstrating high civic involvement among Senegalese citizens.

Bassirou Diomaye Faye, 44, is expected to become Senegal’s youngest president, a remarkable achievement given that he has never held a national electoral office before. His opponents have acknowledged his triumph, signaling a period of unity and acceptance in the country’s political realm.

Faye’s path to the president was not without hurdles. Prior to the election, he served eleven months in prison alongside Ousmane Sonko before being released on March 14 as part of an amnesty law launched by President Macky Sall. Despite this defeat, Faye wasted no time in launching an intensive election campaign across the country, culminating in a closing event in Mbour, his hometown region.

The election results were hailed with jubilation by Faye’s followers, who assembled in great numbers to celebrate his victory. Furthermore, he received congratulatory notes from his opponents, President Sall, and a number of other countries, emphasizing the importance of his victory on the global stage.

The National Vote Counting Commission published the provisional official results, but the Constitutional Council is responsible for ultimate confirmation and declaration.
